Reinforced Plastic = Plastic + Fibers / Fillers

  • Fibers
    • Glass Fiber → FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastic)
    • Carbon Fiber → CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic)
  • Purpose: strength, rigidity, durability

Reinforced Plastic-এর বৈশিষ্ট্য

Property FRP / CFRP
Strength High tensile strength
Weight Very light
Corrosion Rust-proof, chemical resistant
Maintenance Low
Fabrication Moldable, sometimes custom shaping
Cost Medium-High (FRP), Very High (CFRP)

Material Type Typical Use
FRP (Glass Fiber) Pipes, tanks, boats, doors, roofing sheets
CFRP (Carbon Fiber) Aerospace, high-end structural reinforcement
HDPE / PVC + Fiberglass Water pipes, sewage lines, industrial roofing

World's strongest plastics

  1. Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP)
    • Tensile strength
    • Aerospace / race cars / bridges / high-end architecture
  2. Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP / GFRP)
    • Cost-effective
    • Pipes, tanks, roofing, doors
    • Moderate strength, lightweight, corrosion resistant
  3. Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE / Dyneema)
    • Extreme tensile strength
    • Bulletproof vests, ropes
    • Construction uses limited (pipes rare)

Practical Bangladesh use

Application Recommended Material
Pipes (water/sewage) HDPE + FRP / Fiberglass, PVC for cheap
Doors FRP (lightweight, corrosion resistant)
Roofing / Corrugated Sheets FRP sheets (coastal areas), mostly domestic roofing GI
Structural reinforcement CFRP (rare, premium construction)

Key Points

  • FRP = practical, cheap-ish, corrosion resistant
  • CFRP = extremely strong, very expensive, rarely used in buildings
  • Normal domestic roofing / doors / pipes → GI, PVC, HDPE এখনও default

CFRP কি?

Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic = Carbon Fiber + Resin (Plastic)

  • Carbon fiber → extremely strong & stiff
  • Resin → plastic matrix, fibers
  • Corrosion-proof, rust-free

Item Possible? Remarks
Doors ✅ (lightweight, strong, fire & corrosion resistant) Domestic doors rare, mostly premium or industrial
Pipes ✅ (water / sewage) Chemical & corrosion resistant; pressure rated designs needed
Building structural rods (RCC reinforcement) ⚠️ Theoretical Strong, lightweight; expensive & fabrication hard; Steel rod is still preferred
Water / sewage reservoirs ✅ (tanks) Common in high-end or chemical industries
Bulletproof car body High-end armored vehicles; CFRP + Kevlar layers
Bulletproof windows ❌ (Not alone) CFRP not transparent; needs glass + polycarbonate for bulletproof glazing

Physical properties

Property CFRP
Strength Very high tensile strength (5–10× steel-to-weight ratio)
Weight Very light (~1/4 steel)
Color Black (carbon fiber) by default; resin can be pigmented → limited color
Transparency ❌ Not transparent
Fire resistance Moderate → depends on resin type
Durability Corrosion-proof, long lifespan

Color & transparency

  • Color: Resin can be pigmented → CFRP can be grey, red, blue, etc.
  • Transparency: ❌ Impossible → carbon fibers block light, opaque black
  • Finish: Glossy, matte, textured (depends on mold & resin)

Practical use in Bangladesh context

  • Domestic doors: Too expensive, rare → FRP or steel cheaper
  • Pipes / tanks: Premium chemical / coastal areas → CFRP feasible
  • Structural rods: Theoretical; Steel still best
  • Bulletproof vehicles / armor: CFRP + Kevlar layer → feasible
  • Windows / glazing: Use polycarbonate / laminated glass; CFRP only for frame

Summary

  1. CFRP = Strong, light, corrosion resistant
  2. Not transparent, color can be modified with resin
  3. Cost very high → domestic building / roofing / pipes জন্য practical নয়
  4. Best applications: aerospace, race cars, premium armored vehicles, chemical tanks, high-end bridges
